My new kitchen

September 6, 2013

I moved into a new apartment recently, as you probably know, if you read my blog on a regular basis. I’ve blogged about the move here and here.

The first month has flown by and I’ve been busy with fixing it up and decorating. Every inch has been sanded down, painted, oiled or fixed up in one way or the other – phew! And it is looking more and more like a home. The kitchen is almost done, so I thought that I would give you the grand tour. I know quite a few of you have been waiting for pictures (thanks for all your sweet comments!).

Let’s just rewind for a minute and take a look at what the kitchen looked like before I moved in. Afterwards I will show you, what it looks like now and tell you all about what I’ve done. The before photos are from the sales brochure from the real estate agent.

This is what the kitchen looked like when the previous owner lived here.

This is what it looks like now.

The kitchen was quite new and luckily I liked it and saw great potential in the room. It is twice as big as my old kitchen and has splendid light all day and the most beautiful afternoon and evening sunshine. But I did want to change a few things. First up, we stripped the floor of varnish and painted it white. More floor talk here. The white floors reflect all that gorgeous light and has really made the room come together.

We painted the walls, ceiling, skirting, door frames and windows white too and installed a shelf above the fridge.

Then we removed the door from the hallway as it was only in the way and also took out the little folding table on the opposite wall of the counter top. Instead we installed an extra counter top in the whole length of the wall. I still need a good high stool for this spot. You know, where I can sit and have my morning coffee or my dinner guests can enjoy a glass of wine while I cook. I have my eye on some gorgeous ones – more on that later.

We put in a Muuto dot to hang a tote bag from to collect recycle bottles in.

We took down the ceiling lamps and put up two Muuto E27 lamps instead. I love the simplicity of the design.

I have always been a great fan of Smeg fridges, but I would not have chosen a red one, if I was buying a new one. At first I was not so happy with it, but it has grown on me! It’s a breath of fresh air in all the white and it gives the room an edge. Plus it is the first thing people notice when they walk in the room.

The stove is also from Smeg and so is the sink. The only thing missing is a dishwasher (Oh boy do I miss my dishwasher!!). A dishwasher is definitely on the (very long) list.

The back door is painted with blackboard paint and I’ve kept it that way. This is perfect for the groceries list and also for keeping track of appointments.
Two HAY pots have moved in to keep fresh herbs in.

I still have a few things on my decorating list for the kitchen, but this is what it looks like now. I also want to sand down the counter top and stain it with white oil. It will seal the wood and make it less vulnerable to dirt and stains. Just like I did with the floor in the bedroom.
Hope you enjoyed the tour and I will keep you updated when new things are happening.

Happy Friday x

Love love love. I have a red kitchen aid which I bought and chose but red is not my favourite colour. I wanted a Matt grey one at the time but my husband just didn’t get it. However, it a real conversation piece too in my kitchen. Love your smeg xxx

We should form a club! ;) The (very) red Smeg and I are getting along nicely – and it is the one thing I am sure people will always comment on when they walk in the door – or see pictures here and on Instagram ;)

Tusind tak Trine! Ja, nogle gange er det godt at få skubbet lidt til sine grænser. Det røde køleskab og jeg er ved at være fine venner – selv om det er meget rødt! ;)

This is so beautiful and done with the characteristic Scandinavian eye for subtle details that, taken all together, achieve an effortless warmth and calm. An enviable balance!
