Do I need a rug?

Living room via that nordic feeling

Fall has arrived. The days are getting shorter and the nights are now dark enough for lit candles. There’s even been a few mornings last week, where I had to button up my coat when biking to work. The sun is still out most days, but the wind is getting colder. It will soon be time to get all the woollen blankets and sheepskins out of storage.

I recently moved all the furniture in the living room around and I have been thinking about getting a rug for the sofa corner. I love my beautiful wooden floors and therefore I have always hesitated about covering them up. But recently I have been giving it a lot of thought. As I have never had a rug before I am curious to know, what your experiences are? Do they attract a lot of dust etc.? How often do you vacuum yours? Please leave a comment if you want to share – I would love to get your two cents before I make a decision. This is what the room looks like now without a rug.

As rug goes I want a nice quality one. I have my eye on two so far but am still looking for options. I al looking for a light grey one as it will fit the palette in the living room. I have had the longest crush on the Bjorn Rug from Designhouse Stockholm. I love the effect of the different greys mixed together and the leather trims are to die for.

The second contender is from the new Danish brand SemiBasic. I have seen a sneak peek of their brand new light grey version so new, that it’s not up in their shop yet – and therefore I have to show you pictures of the dark grey version. Also gorgeous – but light grey is my colour. I have seen this in person and am impressed with the quality – the wool is so soft. Also the price is really fair – and we do love that, don’t we!

Are there any other good rugs out there I need to know about? Please leave a comment if you know of one I need to see – and also I would love to hear your experiences with having a rug before I make up my mind. Thank you guys – have a great week x

Hmm I’m not sure.. :) I don’t have a rug either as I feel it makes the room appear a lot smaller, but I can imagine why you would (warm feet anyone?) :) I would not get a rug in practically the same colour though (and similar ‘meleed’ fabric) as you’re suggesting here, won’t that just feel like one large chunk of grey? Hope you’re well Rikke :) — Flor

Ugh I meant the same colour as your (also ‘meleed’, mixed dark and lighter fibres) Karlstad sofa :)

I too am having the same dilemma. We have a mid grey one from Ikea from years ago but I really dislike it. It was a choice at the time for warmth as our floor boards have gaps and cold air comes up through them in winter (as well as those pesky slugs!) It’s practically the same colour as our mid grey sofa and I can’t abide it. I do however love warm grey tones. I love the design house stockholm one too but the price doesn’t make me happy. I like the dark grey one you showed but our other sofa in that room room is practically the same colour!

I’ve looked at Kilim rugs, and those lovely cream/white fluffy NZ wool ones with the graphic grey lines through and plus sign ones from Urban Outfitters. I found 2 reasonable priced ones I like so far but I’ve just not committed to any yet.

I love this one from Made.com http://www.made.com/home-textiles/rugs/dhurries-isis-rug-170-x-240cm-black-and-white and then this one from Ikea http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10229021/#/10229021. We already have a small one in our bedroom but I’ve considered another smaller one and stitching them together.

Personally I love rugs but I think part of that is my son loves to sit and play and lie on the floor and we all like to walk barefoot too. It just adds a little warmth through those winter months and gives the chance add extra places to sit. I always used to sit on the floor against the sofa by the radiator. maybe I’m just a cold person :)

Can’t wait to see what you decide to go with. x

I think that your room needs a rug, it will be much comfortabler, especially for the winter.
The first one is too similar to your sofa, the second one would be perfect!
Let us know which one you choose ;-)
    Best regards,

The room definitely needs a rug, although your floor is indeed beautiful. Winter is about blankets and rugs! A rug “hugs” the eye and creates a cosy feeling around your seating area. I prefer your first option, I like the leather detail. In my mind though, rugs are about feet sinking in something really deep and soft, inviting you and your guests to hang around. Since you don’t have pets, cleaning wouldn’t be a real problem. Just give it to a professional cleaner once a year.

Yes rugs do collect dust Etc but they are a great centre piece or art. Love both your choices. Good luck xxx

I’ve always looovveddd your living room! But since it will be getting colder, I think a rug would be a great way to cozy up! Also, you’d be surprised at how a rug can tie a room together!

Let us know what you decide!

Hi Rikke. Go for a rug. Gives the furniture a great base. Fabula Living does great carpets in neutral colours. Sweets/Laura

YES, I think you should have a rug. I didn’t have rugs either but now just love mine. Mine are leather from Ilva. They are super easy to keep clean.

Tip if you decide to buy, role them out in the store as the patterns vary….Not all cows are alike…:)

OH, I can imagine a large cow-hide rug, a black and white one, or if you wanted a little bit of colour in it, a light brown and white one….. Love your couch!

Hi, you probably got a rug already since I only know stumbled on your page via Pinterest. I like a rug that ads a color to the neutral decor, but one of similar hue but lighter or darker works well, too.

If one wants a rug that doesn’t collect that much dust, going for a tight weave is a good idea. We had a teflon coated rug that was otherwise easy to clean but the tuft(?) was short and collected hair and lint. I might find a wool/paperyarn one if I figure out how their kept clean (I am Finnish so I used to have ones I could wash myself in the summer). Depending on the materian rugs can be really heavy so that might be something to consider if one needs to move them alone.

I am obsessed with that coffee table, it keeps popping up on my brand new Pinterest account, but I don’t know who’s it is? I wonder if you could help?
