I love hydrangeas. They are so beautiful; the white ones, the pink ones and the blue and purple ones. But they are rather tricky! I have learned this the hard way. I can’t count how many times I’ve picked up a beautiful bunch at the florist only to come home, put them in water and watching them collapsing within the first hours or day.
I’ve tried every trick in the book without any luck until I discovered the one trick that works. Finally a way to enjoy these beauties.
This is what you do:
- Boil some water and pour it into a cup.
- Cut the stems one at a time at a very sharp angle with a knife not a scissor. You want a big diagonal cut, so the surface that takes in the water is as big as possible.
- Dip the stem in the hot water for 20-30 seconds.
- Put it straight into a vase with tempered water.
That’s it! Change the water every day. Repeat the whole process after a few days to make them last longer.
Make sure that you come straight home after buying these – they do not take transport without water very well. If you are lucky enough to have them in your garden, bring a bucket of water to put them in straight after cutting them.
Enjoy your beautiful flowers x
