A new Bjørn Wiinblad exhibition opens tomorrow on Arken Museum of Modern Art – the biggest one to date. I was fortunate enough to go on a pre opening tour earlier this week, and I loved it! Wiinblad’s universe is as whimsical and magical as it gets – and they’ve brought in every play in the book. The Wiinblad exhibition will run from June 13th through January 17th next year, and I highly recommend you stop by, if you have the chance. The architecture of Arken is a sight in itself.
Like so many other Danes in my generation I grew up with Wiinblad’s characteristic designs. His naive work makes me smile and has a very special place in my heart. My parents had vases, ashtrays and all 12 calendar platters hanging in the kitchen – I remember looking at them when eating breakfast in the morning. When they took them all down and gave them away, I held on to the December plate – my birth month. I still have it and use it as a coaster and trivet from time to time. I even tried my hand at styling a Wiinblad – remember?
Bjørn Wiinblad (1918-2006) was famous for his colourful and playful designs. They stood out against the contemporary designers works. In the 60’s and 70’s when Bjørn Wiinblad was most popular in Denmark most other designers went for minimal and functional design – what Danish design are most known for around the world. But not him. He was not afraid of colours and personality.
The new exhibition covers a broad aspect of his many, many works of art. In Denmark he is most know for the trivets and ceramic coasters (like the December one I have) – and that is just a tiny fraction of his work. From sketches like this early one of his new pew below to ballet costumes, wall carpets, dinner ware, fine china, sculptures in different materials and scenery designs for ballets and plays. I promise you that you can’t leave the exhibition without a big smile one your face. It is impossible. The many colours, the cuddly round people and the triangle-shaped noses – it is a feast for your eyes, soul and imagination.
And while you are there enjoy the beautiful scenery surrounding Arken as well as the gorgeous architecture. Arken Museum of Modern Art is a monumental landmark surrounded by a manmade beachscape just south of Copenhagen. The museum showcases one of Scandinavia’s finest collections of contemporary art, and the maritime-inspired architecture has gained the museum international renown.
