September started out by gracing us with fairly warm and sunny days, but lately it seems like fall has arrived. And according to the calendar, it’s true – fall is here. I always cry a little when it’s time to put my sandals away. It seems like a lifetime till next time it’s time for sandal weather. I don’t think you can relate to this unless you live in Scandinavia – the long, dark winters are a phenomena of their own.
Although I will never be as excited about this season as I am about summer, I do like the cozy things fall is bringing to the table; woollen blankets, knitted pillows, sheep skins in the sofa and nights lit by candle light. And what I love even more, are all the interior autumn/winter news.
People are always asking me what I think will be big in the coming season. So today I want to share the top 6 interior trends, that I believe we will see a lot of this fall and winter. I have broken the post into two parts because it’s long. Here is part 1 – part 2 will follow next week.
Tend 1: Burgundy, bordeaux and plum
Last year it was all about blue. Every shade of blue – in particular the darker ones. I believe the darker colours are here to stay for a while. We’ve had enough of the softer pastels for now. I believe the darker blue, grey and green will still be quite dominant, but colours like burgundy, bordeaux and dark plum will pop up more and more. All rich and lush colours perfect for the colder season.
Go all in and paint a wall – not the entire room, just a single wall in your living room, bedroom of home office. It will be a perfect sidekick for colours like grey, black or dark blue. If you want to start out smaller, get a pillow, a print, a blanket, a chair or a rug. Again it will be a perfect sidekick for a monochrome styled room and also for dark colours like grey, black and dark blue along with furniture in wood or white.
Burgundy is the new kid in town and I haven’t even been able to find a decent picture of a burgundy wall to show you for inspiration. I believe in it, so fellow stylists and interior decorators, let’s get busy shall we?

Trend 2: Plants – the bigger the better
Good news for those of you with green thumbs out there: We still love plants – and lots of them. Succulents, pileas, fig trees and the newcomer this season; palm trees. The bigger the better! And the more you can arrange in clusters together, the better.
Last year we began to see floral and plant prints on posters, pillows, wall paper etc. That trend is even stronger this year, so go all green and decorate with floral and plant patterns along with your live plants.
Trend 3: Bar carts
I am so into Mad Men these days! It’s my current guilty pleasure. Yes, I am late to the game, I know, but Don Draper has finally made an appearance in my life over the summer. If you’ve watched it, you have spotted the never missing bar cart stocked and ready to go with lots of booze and ice in every single room of the house and every single office. Thank God that has changed or we would all be walking around drunk by lunch (how they managed to get any work done is beyond me!).
Bar carts have been popping up every where – from the minimal new ones to the beautiful vintage ones. And even though we don’t drink like they did in the 50’s, who doesn’t love cocktail hour or an after work drink every now and again. Spice it up with beautiful crystal glasses and a beautiful decanter or pitcher for a dash of decadence.
