IKEA is launching a new limited handmade collection created in collaboration with Ingegerd Råman, a Swedish glass designer and ceramists, called VIKTIGT (which means important). And the important thing to notice is not big gestures, colourful products or overly decorative details. Instead, this crafted collection is understated, simple and extraordinary. Beauty is in the details.
Besides glassworks and ceramic sets, much is made from bamboo and natural fibre. It includes furniture, baskets, rugs, a couple of large lamps, bowls in different sizes and braided lids. Handmade all through.
The beauty comes through in its function. It’s about millimetres. Constant corrections and improvements. VIKTIGT is work based on obstinate reduction until just the essence, the essentials, remain. Notice for example the missing handles from the water bottles.
“I take away, then take away some more,” says Ingegerd Råman.
VIKTIGT is a limited collection as all items are handmade and will be sold in Denmark from May 6th.
And may I just add, that I love that IKEA is starting to add small collections with personality, great design and long-lasting quality instead of sticking to big collections in poorer materials made for a bigger audience. This is the way to go, so keep it up please!
